Getting headaches from water?

Water seems to have been a good topic of conversation recently, so I figured I'd post this question now...As the title suggests, I find that whenever I drink a lot of water (without a meal), I pretty much always get a headache. My best guess is that I'm flushing a lot of salts out of my system, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or has any ideas for a solution. Thanks.

Note: The headache comes no matter what temp. the water is- so I know it's not a "brain freeze"

My question is how much water are you taking in? For the most part it would take a lot of water to cause water intoxication however the symptoms do make sense. I've read that symptoms of water intoxication are similar to those of dehydration and headaches are one of them.

To avoid this moderate your water intake. Drink enough but don't over do it or eat food more often or drink a gatorade.

I agree with 1quick1 that your probably suffering from water intoxication but I think the question isn't how much water you drink, but when do you drink it. The kidneys of a healthy adult can process about 15 liters of water a day. So unless hes drinking over 4 gallons a day (which is insane) I think his problem is not spreading his water consumption throughout the day.

I was drinking about 24oz of water at "a sitting" if you can call it that...but I've given it a rest. I probably was drinking it a bit too fast- maybe I have a lower tolerance for water (that sounds really lame, heh) since I have a few friends who pound it without problem...I'm going to try and spread it out even more throughout the day, thanks for the tips!

This only occurs to me when I drink milk, because of how cold it is, trying uping your water intake like 1quick1 said.

Wow I couldn't imagine drinking all that water! And thats just water you drink, you get a lot of water from food also. Of course the limit of water a day varies from person to person, well actually theres a limit per hour your kidney can process and thats why you should spread your water consumption throughout the day. There are a lot of factors on how much water you can consume like if they you a high sodium diet or low sodium diet, if they have kidney problems ect... But it seems like your doing fine and shouldn't worry too much.

Condor said it happens no matter what temperature the water is so its not that. And 1quick1 said to moderate his water intake, nothing about uping it. That would probably make things worst

water retention is raising your blood pressure... leading to your headaches

check your bp and cut salts out of your diet

its NOT water intoxication

Geez...your hypothalamus does a pretty good job at telling you when you need water, just drink when you begin to feel thirsty. Do NOT down a ton in one sitting- when you don't have any water for awhile (few hours) the body releases water retention hormones so the next time you drink you will have massive uptake by parts that down regulated (the body goes into a conservation mode and gives priority to major organs). Spread it out throughout the day.

Then I'd get off that immediately because anything that extreme is so unhealthy it's ridiculous.

I am of the same opinion. In millions of years of evolution we would not rid ourselves of something as efficient as a thirst mechanism...

I think alwyn cosgrove said that.

Waiting until your thirsty means your body is already dehydrated - Not good.

"Thirst lags behind your body’s need for water. So when you are thirsty, you are already in deficit of needed fluid,"

To threadstarter - Sounds very strange. I would suggest researching the matter, or maybe just making sure you get most of your water WITH meals, then a little bit in between just to stay hydrated.

yeah, I heard that somewhere too, and as you said BTU, it is sad. People would be doing so much better if they just had a bottle of water, instead of stopping for a donut, bag of chips, etc....

So is Condor still around, I would like to hear if he solved the big water dilema or not

More water myths. Wow.

Here is a cool blog.

I'd recommend the whole series of posts. Most of these statements about water are based on nothing but thin air. You guys believe what you want. I'm just putting information out there for those who are interested.
