Unhappy "That" Time.

I know it's a bit weird for me to be asking advice on something like this, but does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for alleviating cramps during that time of the month?

Usually they're not too bad and I'm completely able to cope with it, but the last year or so they've got worse to the point where I'm now having to down about 400mg ibuprofen a couple times a day just to stand upright.

It's ludicrous, there's no reason for it (I've had regular clear smear tests and shit so I know it's nothing like that) but I just want some way of pain relief without having to take ibuprofen or medication.

I'm not a pansy, I've got a high pain threshold but this is something else entirely (and yeah, I did ask the doctor - he wanted to give me Prozac FFS).

Seems like he would prescribe Vicodin before Prozac. Wow.

I went to him a few years back for advice on coping with my insomnia - bearing in mind at the time I was a single mother with three kids under the age of nine.

His advice?

He wanted to give me a prescription for valium.

Re: "That" Time.

Honey, I am WITH you! I have actually had to go to the emergency room before due to such horrifying cramps that my blood pressure dropped, vomited for HOURS, spiked a fever...everything.

You wouldn't think something so normal would be so horrible.

Your doctor gave you terrible advice, though- regarding Prozac

Real time advice: Take Advil (ibuprofen) BEFORE you get cramps.

Ibuprofen is the only OTC drug that prevents your body from releasing the hormones (prostaglandins) that cause your uterus to contract and cause...those...awful...cramps.

Key word: Take it the day before your period starts. It works best at preventing the START of the cramping pain, not so much after the horror has begun.

Oh, and take it with a piece of bread or something before you actually eat, so you avoid nausea...and you avoid a boat load of food impeding absorption of the drug.

My doctor gave me this advice after years of suffering.

And...after all my hospital stays/exams and different prescriptions...it worked!

I don't like taking hormones. It makes me feel like shit and actually makes my periods far worse, plus my skin breaks out and I'm not that far short of being a psycho bitch on them.

If it was down to contraception I still wouldn't use them since I've been sterilised.

Thanks for that adina, I'll give it a go. I just don't like taking medication unnecessarily.

I'm so stupid at times.

it's probably progesterone that makes you do that. they have some that are estrogen based and don't cause those issues.

I tried five or six brands when I was younger, all of them had the same kind of effect, and I've tried others throughout the years with no success - even the Depo-Provera doesn't work for me, makes me feel awful.

I guess my body just doesn't like synthetic hormones for some reason.

Re: "That" Time.

the depo-provera shot is progesterone also.

i take Yaz which is more estrogen based and has no progesterone in it.
