Treadmil (sp) v.s. Bike

Hey

Which would be best for cardio/fat loss

I'm wanting to get my parents to buy a treadmil as there funner and yeh seem to work better.

Just wondering which would be the best say 30 mins of bike v.s. 30 mins of treadmil.

And any other general comments on the two of these

Depends I would say treadmill just because you can change the elevation and on a bike you can coast and get no benifit.

The threadmill is better for fat loss. Anything that seems easier usually isn't working you as hard. Lifting heavy weights and running are the two best things you can do for fat loss right behind a good diet.

30 minutes on threadmill will be better then 30 minutes on the bike. Obviously this will change if you're running at 3mph form 30 minutes on the threadmill or hauling ass at 25mph on the bike.

Depends on how you use them. However, I vote for the Treadmill. When I was trying to lose weight, i used the tread at the gym to help with the HIT i was doing(by exact timing). And personally, I prefer doing intervals while running rather than on a bike. Also this site could help if you know your parent's weight -

Treadmill is a impact exercise, it burns more calories then bike at equal efforts.

A lot of factors go into actual fat burned compared to calories...but

At 200 lbs body weight a stationary bike burns about 670 cal. at 12-14 m/h that is considered a moderate effort.

A 10 min mile is about 870 cals at 200 lbs on a treadmill.
A 7 min mile is a whopping 1300 cals at 200lbs ..WOW.

Elliptical trainers are generally listed as the best cal burners.

i do the eliptical machine because running puts alto of stress on my knees. i also think i have a heel spur, oh well, im gonna run tomarrow, i know its a better workout in a shorter time, so i likes as i hate cardio. the only thing im curious about is if running will hurt my squat gains

based on the website above having some sex for a half hour or so is a good cardio workout

Problem with a bike is you are not suporting your bodyweight.I think the tread has to be better, but if at all possible bundle up and get outside. Its damn cold where I live but I think its worth it.

I agree with the above posters, a treadmill will work better for you if you are trying to lose fat. Either one would be better than not doing anything at all, so just make the best of what they get.

tredmill all day. the more muscles you have to use to do a particular function, the more energy needed. tredmill uses virtually the whole body whereas with the bike, your body weight is supported alot as backer said, so not as much effort needed. with exeption to speeds done on each (then results can change )

The bike though, can be more beneficial to s a very over-weoght person. it would be alot harder for a 20 stone person to try to jog on a tredmill rather than sit on a bike and use just their legs

Eliptical trainer is what i do and has been working for me. Dose not put so much stress on your joints especialy if you do not have a good tredmill or track to run on. shity tredmills and cement will pay a toll on your body after awhile.

I find biking is much better on my joints than jogging as well. I went out last year and got myself a good mountain bike, and was hitting the trails 2-3 times a week. after an intense, 30 min. ride, my arms and legs felt like puddy. great workout imo. and if I dont feel like getting all muddy and cut up, than there are some good hills around my house, and I just bike up and down them for 30 mins or so. no better cardio workout than that imo. and since its winter here now, I went out and bought a stand for my bike, so I can stationary bike in front of the tv during the winter months. its not as intense, but Im bulk during the winter months, so cardio isnt as important.

i find runnin on the roads is a lot better as ur out in the air and u actually movin an seeing differnat things however if u do go for treadmill remeber to hav an incline of 4% as to re create the foward motion ( when using a treamill ur basically runnin on the spot)

This brings up a good point. I believe the threadmill is better then the other machines but I think actually running outside is better and will burn more calories.
