What is a plank?

I hear everyone talking about doing "planks" to work the core. What is it, and how do you do it?

You're a plank! lol

Nah, good question mate

A plank is where you get in a press up position and then go down to rest on your elbows with your arms on the floor - then literally keep your whole body straight for as long as you can for either one whole duration or 3 sets of X amount of mins...

Its also called a Prone Iso-Ab.

Progressions to this would be:

Add weight
Extend 1 arm or 1 leg
Extend both opposite ends, left arm extended, right leg extended
Extend both same sided ends, left arm extended, right left extended (hard)
Abduct 1 arm or leg (hard)
Abduct both opposite ends, same as above

OR..

You can do planks on a stability ball. Try switching between the forearms resting on the ball or the feet resting on the ball.

Its funny. I have been in maybe 5 gyms since I started lifting and I never saw ANYONE do planks. Ever since I got NASM certified, I was then the only one. When I came to college not 30 days ago, I have now seen countless of students doing them.

Guess the words out.

I hear you there. I've never seen anyone besides me do planks at my gym and I lift in a VERY nice facility where you think all the serious lifters would flock.

Just the other day I seen some guy doing front squats. Only the 2nd person I've seen doing front squats in the 3 years I've had a membership there. I wanted to shake his hand

Even I am shady about doing Front Squats. Not cuz of fear, but cuz I cant let my pride get int he way of letting numbers from a back squat wait.

Now I just lunge and bulgarian squat.

We use planks all the time during the dynamic workouts we put people through. My favorite is putting people in the plank position and I get down and face them. I put one hand out and we slap hands until they fall. Last week I did the following which is super tough:

3 platesx30 seconds
2 platesx30 seconds
1 platex30 seconds
BWx30 seconds

I had a spotter of course and he stripped a plate off every 30 seconds. This is stupid tough!

When should planks be done though? I really want to start doing these types of exercises but I have no idea when to do them or what do do in terms of reps/sets etc.

Planks are simple to work into a routine. I like to do core 2-3 times a week. While some people do them on seperate days I think they could be done just as easy at the end of a workout. I have some of my larger clients steer away from things like crunches since they actually will expand the midsection and women dont want that so we do things like planks. Do different variations of planks.....
